Israman, the peace relay
Three athletes, three religions
Completing the 1,900-metre swim in open water will be 30 year old Israeli national team swimmer Guy Barnea, who won silver in the 50m backstroke at the European Short Course Championship at Chartres in 2012 and bronze over the same distance in the European Long Course Championship in Budapest in 2010 and again at Debrecen in 2012.
Barnea will then pass the baton to Claudio Chiappucci, a timeless champion and Italian cycling icon of the 1980s and 90s, who will do the 90-kilometre cycling route. This event will be a source of great pride to an athlete whose career spans a silver medal at the World Championships in Agrigento in 1994, victory in the Milano-Sanremo in1991, three stages in the Tour de France and one in the Giro d’Italia, as well as six podium positions in the overall classifications of the aforementioned.
Bringing the Relay to a conclusion with the 21-kilometre run will be Muslim Israeli runner Haneen Radi, who is also a coach with a club with around 80 athletes on its books. A mother as well as an athlete, Haneen’s story is all-too often reflected in the news.
